A major licensing initiative to increase access to vital patented cloud computing technology has been started by NovaCloud Licensing. A group of seasoned professionals with more than 40 years of combined expertise in technology-related intellectual property licensing are leading this initiative.
Acknowledged for its innovative contributions to ICT, Ericsson has invested heavily in R&D, IP-based solutions, multimedia, and cellular network infrastructure. These initiatives have played a key role in creating technologies that are essential to the state of cloud computing today.
Developed from Ericsson’s groundbreaking research in cloud computing, networking, and content delivery over the previous 20 years, NovaCloud Licensing, based in Palo Alto, was established in 2024 to assume ownership of and grant access to the core patented technology.
NovaCloud Licensing has acquired a substantial patent portfolio from Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (Ericsson), a renowned leader in ICT solutions. This portfolio, which consists of 40 patent families and 152 worldwide patent assets, has been transferred to NovaCloud to facilitate professional licensing to various industry players. The acquisition would demonstrate Ericsson’s dedication to broadly distributing the key intellectual property that underpins the advancements in contemporary cloud computing.
Mathias Hellman, Vice President of IPR Strategy at Ericsson, emphasized the strategic nature of the patent transfer. “Ericsson has sold certain patents to NovaCloud as one of several ways to receive a reasonable reward for the technology we created. Ericsson’s has a robust patent portfolio of over 60,000 patents and various approaches to monetization, including patent divestments, to optimally address a diverse market.”
IaaS, PaaS, Cloud, and More
The patents acquired by NovaCloud Licensing cover a broad range of key technologies, including IaaS and PaaS cloud infrastructure, network reliability, traffic management, network security, load balancing, auto-scaling, virtualization, resource management, and video streaming. These technologies are integral to cloud computing platforms and services globally, spanning the US, Europe, and Asia.
Joe Chernesky, Founder and CEO of NovaCloud, expressed his gratitude for Ericsson’s trust in NovaCloud Licensing to manage these crucial technologies. “Our goal is to make these patented technologies available to all companies, enabling them to provide the best solutions for their markets and customers,” said Mr. Chernesky. He believes that the foundational portfolio will act as a catalyst for further technological advancements in cloud networks and services, benefiting users and consumers worldwide.
NovaCloud Licensing‘s strategic action is expected to improve accessibility to vital cloud technologies, spurring innovation and allowing a broad spectrum of businesses to take advantage of these developments to improve their products and services. The global distribution of these patented technologies is anticipated to have a major impact on the future of digital services and solutions as the cloud computing industry grows.
