I was reviewing waternyc’s thread regarding their nameservers issues. I saw Cloudflare was recommended (again) as a DNS provider. While I have nothing against Cloudflare, I do not use them for DNS management for domains. However, I do use Cloudflare for my PfSense router’s DNS servers.
For domain names, I tend to lean towards NS1.com for DNS management. Their new free plan is quite generous. Previously, the old free plan allowed up to 500k inquiries per month and only 50 DNS records. Now, the new free plan allows up to 5 million inquiries and 500 DNS records.
The main reason why I like NS1 is for redundant DNS. I configure NS1 as the primary DNS provider, and Hurricane Electric HE.net as secondary. Thus, I end up with 8 nameservers. When I publish a change to my NS1.com DNS records, it takes about 30 – 60 seconds to publish to the changes to my HE.net account. Here is a post I found on NS1’s website for additional information on redundant DNS if you’d like more information.
It’s probably been a decade since I’ve used Cloudflare as DNS provider. Do they allow your DNS records to be published to a secondary DNS provider for DNS redundancy? Apologies, it has been a while, but Cloudflare had outages before that affected domains that used them as their DNS provider, correct? My memory doesn’t work as well as it used to Maybe I am getting an old outage confused with their DNS management product. You can review NS1’s uptime report here. I went back 10 years and they’ve had 100% uptime
!
I guess I am used to NS1.com, which is why I stay. I’m sure the same can be said for those of you who have been with Cloudflare for so long. I’m extremely happy with NS1 and the fact I can configure HE.net as the secondary provider. If anyone is ever interested in this same setup, feel free to ask me questions. I’d be happy help you if you’re interested.
Other than Cloudflare and NS1, what other DNS providers have you all used? Why do you stay with Cloudflare if you’re a current customer?
