The biggest not-for-profit internet exchange in Michigan, the Detroit Internet Exchange (DET-iX), is pleased to announce a significant infrastructure update that includes cutting-edge switches from the 7060X5 family from Arista Networks. In DET-iX’s continuous effort to provide its growing member community with high-speed, low-latency interconnection services, this investment represents a significant milestone.
“Arista Networks’ leading-edge technology and expertise will significantly enhance the Detroit Internet Exchange, strengthening Michigan’s internet backbone and contributing to the growth of the digital economy,” said Ryan Duda, chief technology officer for 123NET. “Major Internet companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Google have been drawn to the Detroit Internet Exchange because of its distinctive open-access, carrier-neutral, and fee-free model. Our collaboration with Arista guarantees that the exchange will be in a strong position to satisfy expanding needs for many years to come.”
For the first time, DET-iX recently exceeded 2.5 terabits per second of peak traffic, underscoring the growing demand for reliable, scalable infrastructure to serve the state’s digital environment.
Two Arista 7060DX5-32 switches have been included into DET-iX’s core infrastructure as part of the upgrade. Important characteristics include: 32 400GbE QSFP-DD ports; 12.8 Tbps wire-speed throughput; 825 ns latency; and a shared packet buffer of 57 MB.
Maximizing Network Performance
These switches can accommodate up to 128 x 100GbE ports per device and offer versatile breakout configurations. A total switching capacity of 25.6 Tbps is now provided by DET-iX, which guarantees sufficient headroom for traffic growth with increased scalability, reliability, network resilience, and member connectivity choices.
“We were able to complete this installation with zero disruption to DET-iX service,” said Ryan Duda. “The smooth implementation was achieved through strong partnership with the Arista team, with Cal Cook providing helpful support during the initial configuration phase.”
Facilities where networks link to exchange traffic with one another are known as internet exchange points. Switching equipment is used in these exchanges to maximize network performance and enable effective peering between members. 123NET’s Southfield headquarters, Michigan’s finest connected data center facility, is home to DET-iX, one of the biggest internet exchanges in the world.
