Australian superannuation fund CareSuper has selected Macquarie Cloud Services, a business unit of Macquarie Technology Group (ASX: MAQ), to lead a comprehensive cloud transformation project. The engagement marks a strategic shift from VMware Cloud on AWS toward a “more flexible and cost-effective” Microsoft Azure environment, as CareSuper seeks to modernize its IT infrastructure and improve long-term value delivery to its members.
The initiative involves migrating and reconfiguring CareSuper’s VMware Cloud on AWS (VMC) architecture, encompassing petabytes of data and hundreds of enterprise applications, into a fully managed Azure Local Edge service. The move aims to consolidate CareSuper’s technology environment into a single, secure, and scalable platform optimized for performance, efficiency, and adaptability.
For CareSuper, a fund managing over $57 billion in assets on behalf of more than 573,000 members, the migration is part of a broader effort to future-proof its digital operations. “Our objective is to optimize every aspect of our business so we can provide long-term value to our members,” said Simon Reiter, Chief Technology Officer at CareSuper. “Cloud choices must support that goal, not just now but also in five years. As a partner that could deliver the required technological transformation and ongoing managed service maturity, Macquarie Cloud Services stood out.”
PaaS Technologies
Macquarie’s approach includes database modernization, the adoption of platform-as-a-service (PaaS) technologies, and the development of a new Azure landing zone for rehosted and refactored workloads. The company has assumed full project risk by covering the cost of the migration upfront, offering CareSuper financial predictability and a results-driven engagement model. Simon Reiter emphasized the significance of this arrangement, stating that Macquarie’s willingness to assume migration cost risk demonstrates both confidence and customer-centricity.
Macquarie Cloud Services has observed a growing trend of organizations reassessing their reliance on AWS. According to Naran McClung, Head of Azure at Macquarie Cloud Services, “We’re seeing a wave of repatriation from AWS. Architectural constraints and rising costs are leading many organizations to rethink their cloud strategy. But what’s more important than simply moving workloads is knowing how to advance them. That’s where we add value.”
The project would also benefit from Macquarie Cloud Services’ standing as a certified Microsoft Azure Expert Managed Services Provider (MSP) – a status it has maintained for four consecutive years. This elite designation, held by only a few providers across the Asia Pacific region, requires rigorous annual audits and continuous performance excellence. “Since we established Azure in 2020, we’ve seen our Azure team and business grow by roughly 20% annually,” Naran McClung noted. “Being an Azure Expert MSP is not a one-time milestone – it demands unwavering commitment, detailed evaluations, and above all, a consistent ability to deliver customer value.”
