Rubrik has unveiled Agent Rewind, a new capability designed to give enterprises a way to reverse unwanted actions made by autonomous AI agents, addressing one of the emerging challenges in the adoption of agentic AI. The launch follows Rubrik’s recent acquisition of AI infrastructure company Predibase, whose technology now underpins the new offering.
As AI agents gain more autonomy in executing tasks, they can introduce a new class of operational risk: “non-human error.” While these agents can optimize for outcomes and operate at scale, errors – from incorrect decisions to misconfigured systems – can still lead to downtime, data loss, or compliance breaches. Industry observers note that such risks are often underestimated when businesses evaluate AI adoption.
Johnny Yu, Research Manager at IDC, warns that “organizations should explore solutions that allow them to correct potentially catastrophic mistakes made by agentic AI.”
Agent Rewind is designed to address these challenges by making AI agent actions visible, traceable, and reversible. The tool captures a detailed audit trail, including immutable snapshots of affected data and systems, enabling a secure rollback to a previous state. This approach moves beyond traditional observability, which can show what happened but often fails to explain the cause or offer a safe recovery path.
According to Rubrik’s Chief Product Officer Anneka Gupta, integrating Predibase’s AI infrastructure with Rubrik’s recovery capabilities provides enterprises with a clear process for tracing, auditing, and reversing undesired AI actions. She notes that as organizations increasingly rely on AI agents, having reliable recovery mechanisms will be essential to avoid costly disruptions.
Observability and Secure Rollback
Real-world incidents have demonstrated the stakes: AI agents have been documented making flawed decisions, skipping critical process steps, or even deleting production databases. A recent study cited by Rubrik found that agents frequently become disoriented and fail to complete straightforward multi-step tasks, underscoring the importance of safeguards.
Chad Pallett, Chief Information Security Officer at BioIVT, called Rubrik’s Agent Rewind “the answer I’ve been waiting for,” emphasizing the combined need for observability and secure rollback.
The product’s capabilities include context-enriched visibility, which links each AI action to its root cause – from the initial prompt to the tools used – and safe rollback via Rubrik Security Cloud, covering files, databases, configurations, and code repositories. It also promises broad compatibility, integrating with platforms and agent builders such as Agentforce, Microsoft Copilot Studio, Amazon Bedrock Agents, as well as custom AI agents.
With Agent Rewind, Rubrik aims to fill a critical gap in enterprise AI adoption: ensuring that when autonomous agents make mistakes, organizations can both understand the cause and confidently undo the damage.
